MAY  2013

This  is the month when it  all starts coming together, plaice will be fattening up, all the rays arrive just before the bream and the mullet start to feed.  So the good news is that as I write this a bit late, sorry, end of first week in May, small eyed and spotted ray have been caught in Start Bay and from Dorset beaches and the early smoothies were feeding off Chesil Bank, mostly small at the time, but they will get bigger and spread out, they were also being caught in the Bristol Channel from boats. The bass are starting to re-establish in their old haunts, there has already  been a few double figure fish reported  and the mullet will also be in all the estuaries and harbours, the River Axe was one of the first to see fish caught this year to almost 5lb as I write. The black bream have also started to trickle in and will be shoaling heavily from mid May, the Portland area  seeing the first arrivals,  then they  spread on into Hampshire, Sussex and Kent. Boat anglers should be catching SER, thornbacks, spotted and blonde ray by the end of the month as well as pollack, ling, pout, bream and conger over the wrecks, but don't expect many cod, the early signs are that they will be thin on the ground this year.  Shore and boat anglers will have a big choice by the end of May, enjoy it.
