Redruth SAA

A brief history of  the club.
It's heyday may have been during the time of the Westward TV fishing competitions when there were plenty of fish about.

RSAA was founded in 1962 by a group of anglers who regularly fished Porthtowan beach which is not far from Redruth. They were Ken Munday,Tom Altree, Jack Toms and Phil Triniman. The first meeting was held in June 1962 at the Red Lion in Redruth.  Since then the club  have had their HQ at the Royal Standard, the Clinton Social Club and our present HQ's at the Redruth Albany Rugby Football club at the bottom of Station Hill.
Meetings are held on the first Monday of each month or the first Monday following a bank holiday.

The historic mining town of Redruth is situated right in the heart of the old tin mining district of Cornwall. The sea is never far away with the stormy north atlantic coast a mere 3 miles to the north at
the beach and small harbour of Portreath. To the east about 12 miles away is the much calmer waters of the English Channel at Falmouth. With the sea so close it is natural for local people to take up the
hobby of sea fishing. The main species caught are the bass, Dicentrarchus Labrax, pollack Pollachius Pollachius, conger Conger  Conger, and mackerel Scomber Scombrus, with many species of flatfish
and rays also landed. Because of the influence of the Gulf Stream  exotic species like trigger fish and gilthead bream Sparus Aurata are caught along with expected northern species such as cod Gadus Morhu and coalfish Pollachius Virens. Most club members fish from the shore  but a few have their own boat and enjoy the varied angling from both coasts. Members are diverse in their angling methods with some members enjoying fishing the Atlantic storm beaches for bass whilst others search the secluded creeks for mullet and flounder. Man different techniques are used, ledgering, float fishing and plugging to name but a few.  Some members enjoy the thrill of tournament casting and Darren Wales is one of the leading distance casters in the country. The social side is never neglected with the summer beach Bar-B-Q's and fishing for all the family very popular. Monthly club  meetings are well attended aided by the convivial atmosphere of the Redruth Albany Rugby Club.

The RSAA is affiliated to both the National Federation of Sea Anglers and the Cornish Federation of Sea Anglers.
